Diseñado en un momento en que la camioneta Studebaker de línea no había visto una actualización importante en más de 10 años, la compañía, utilizarando un número de componentes ya existentes, logro un resultado impresionante. El chasis y la caja de carga de la Champ fueron básicamente las mismas que ya se venia utilizado. La sección de la cabina era muy diferente. El diseño y desarrollo de una nueva cabina era imposible, debido a consideraciones de costo, asi que tomando el frente y los laterales del nuevo coche compacto Lark se logró una maravillosa solución adaptando el tamaño y la forma para adaptarse a los requisitos. El personal de ingeniería tomo el sedán de cuatro puertas, lo cortó por la mitad detrás de las puertas delanteras y solo modificó ligeramente la parte delantera para ajustarse a los chasis existentes. La única nueva chapa estampada que se necesitó es la pared trasera de la nueva cabina. Espectacular, principalmente la versión con guardabarros afuera, como esta verde que observamos en el ejemplo.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;Motores y transmisiones&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;Los compradores podian elegir en 1960 el último seis cilindros de cabeza plana, ya sea la del 170-Lark cúbicos pulgadas (90 caballos de fuerza) o la tradicional 245-pulgadas cúbicas "Seis Grandes" (110 caballos de fuerza) que data de principios del decenio de 1930. El motor de 170 pasó a tener válvulas a la cabeza (OHV) para 1961, ganando 22 caballos de fuerza (16 kW) en el proceso (hasta 112), una cantidad suficiente que finalmente se vieron obligados a desistir de los Seis Grandes. El nuevo OHV seis fue un novedoso diseño, manteniendo el mayor número posible de los componentes existentes, mientras que la modernización de un motor que se había introducido en 1939. Lamentablemente, la poca calidad del motor entró en cuestión desde el principio, con un número de motores de desarrollo de grietas en la culata. El problema, que se produjeron con más frecuencia en los motores que habían incorrectamente ajustado válvulas, nunca fue resuelto, pero con el cuidado adecuado, el 170 sigue siendo un motor para muchos propietarios de más de 40 años después de que salió de la producción. Desde el inicio de la producción, los que desean podían elegir el V-8 de 259 - y 289-pulgadas cúbicos con un motor de carburador de dos o cuatro bocas. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;Una amplia variedad de transmisiones, tanto manuales como automáticas, se ofrecen. Modelos standard vienen con palanca en la columna de dirección con caja de tres velocidades manual, tambien de cuatro y cinco velocidades opcional, así como superdirecta (con tres velocidades).
